Natural Sukkah Decorations

Sukkah is the harvest festival of Judaism and a time when we reconnect with nature. There are many traditional sukkah decorations but some of these involve a heavy wasting of food – e.g., stringing together berries, hanging fruit, etc. Not only is this a waste of food, it is also a sure way to attract unwanted bees and hornets to the sukkah. Instead, why not use more natural sukkah decorations that will not waste anything nor attract unwanted visitors?

One such decoration is to decorate the sukkah with wild flowers. These can be hung separately or tied together to make beautiful flower bundles to suspend from the roof or walls.  Another beautiful decoration can be made by collecting an interesting variety of sticks that are tied together. These can be made into hanging mobiles, shaped into Stars of David, painted, wood-burned or simply suspended with colorful pieces of yarn.

Another decoration which finds its way into the Thanksgiving holiday, but has been noticeably absent from the sukkah, is decorative, dried husks of corn. These come in many colors and because they are dried out will not attract bees.

If you make other natural sukkah decorations, contact us and let us know what you're making so we can alert others who would find great pleasure in making and using them as well.
