Shabbat Sand Candles
This is a super project to do at home, at camp or at school.
All you need is candle wax, wicks and sand. If you have a sandbox or live near the beach, you're set. If not, you can purchase a 5-lb. bag of sand at a garden store. Melt the wax by placing it in a pot or coffee can and placing this in a larger pot of water. As the water in the larger pan gets hot, it will melt the wax. Doing it this way prevents the wax from accidentally igniting. Use a rod, stick or candle to make an impression in the sand and pour the wax into the impression. Use the rod or stick to push a candlewick all the way into the sand at the bottom of the impression. This will ensure the wick sticks out of the top of the candle. Wait an hour for the wax to dry and dig the candle out of the sand. Wash off and save for Shabbat.
