I'd like to make a point – some of you call me the Prickly Pear but I'm nothing at all like a pear.  We don't have any pears on either side of my family. I'm a cactus.  I get pretty little flowers and come the end of summer my fruit turns real reddish orange.  And it looks like all you have to do is bite through the skin to get my delicious fruit. Whoa, there, partner.  You go biting into me and you're going to have a real unpleasant surprise on your hands – well, in your mouth to be exact.  I'm covered with very tiny, hair-like spines.  They keep the little critters from munching down to nothing.  So, if you plan to eat me, you'd better use a rough cloth and wipe those little spines off carefully. And, I'm just guessing that once you taste me, you'll forget all about those pears.
