Animal Testing by Proctor & Gamble
Jewish law forbids causing animals unnecessary pain.
At the same time, Jewish tradition teaches that of the 613 Commandments in the Torah, 610 of them must be broken in order to save a human life. You learn that Proctor and Gamble, an Ohio based company that sells many products, uses animals to test the safety of its products. One of the tests used is called LD-50 (Lethal Dose 50%). This test requires that a substance be given to a number of animals until 50% of them die. Each year, this company and many others kill hundreds of thousands of animals to test the safety of everything from cosmetics to furniture polish. Which of the two principles, saving a human life or not causing animals unnecessary pain, applies here? How do you feel about using products that are animal tested?
