Making a Magen HaAdamah

Magen HaAdamah, Hebrew for "Shield of Creation," is a Jewish nature-craft project you can make any time of the year.  To start, find a piece of grapevine or the flexible branch of a brush that you can bend into a circle.  Tie into place or wrap with colorful yarn so that it keeps its hoop shape.  Now, tie a piece of yarn onto the hoop at any place. Stretch the yarn a few inches and pull over the top of the hoop. Bring back under the hoop and between the piece of yarn and the hoop.  Pull tightly and you will see that it holds its place. Continue around the hoop until you are nearly back at the beginning.  Continue by placing the yarn over the first string you attached to the hoop.  Take the yarn over the attached yarn string and bring up between the first attached piece of yarn and the new piece you are working with.  Continue to do this until you have only a small opening left in the center of your Magen HaAdamah.  If you do not know this traditional technique for making a "dream catcher," simply wrap the yarn in any design you choose until your hoop is filled in to your liking.

Now, hang from your Magen items you find in the outdoors. Add items you collect in different seasons.  Parents, know this is a great activity to do with your children. Take photos of the Shields and save.  The pictures will provide you with a photographic record of your child's development from early childhood through early teens.
