House Pets
Cats, dogs, fish, birds, lizards, snakes, mice, gerbils and hamsters are some of the many family pets that the Jewish Nature Center is pleased to welcome as
the Sponsors of the Month.
My name is Samantha and I've been asked to speak on behalf of family pets.
The dogs weren't real happy because they think I'm going to put in a special word just for cats. Pish posh – dogs can be so thick sometimes – and you already know they drool just to see the stuff dripping out of their mouths so I don't have to tell you that we cats are smarter and cleaner. And now to the point of this message.
I've noticed that some of you folks are getting a little lazy with your pets. How many times has my family sat down to a big meal and
forgotten to feed me? Did you know that your Oral Tradition tells you that you should feed your animals before you sit down to eat? You'll find this in the Talmud when lots of Jewish people had cows,
goats, sheep and other rather large animals that had to be fed. You know why, too.
You sit down to a big meal, gorge yourselves and can barely move to the couch in the living room. All of a sudden, a little can of cat food is too much to open up. Come on. I'm not talking about those tank-size bags of dog chow. I'm talking about a little can. Cripes! All you have to do is put it on your electric can opener!
Remember the mitzvah of tz-aar ba-alei hayyim – not to cause any unnecessary pain to animals. And this means not feeding us because of pure laziness. Personally, I think it also means giving cats baths, uggh. Be nice to your pets, give them your love and have patience as they learn what you need to teach them.
