The Deer Family

First, let me clear up a little confusion. I have lots of cousins with different names, but we are all related; the gazelle, hart, hind, antelope, wapiti and moose. Except for my uncles, the moose and wapiti, you've probably read about all of us in the Torah. In Hebrew, I'm generally called a tzvei (plain old deer).  I am the symbol of gracefulness and speed.  In fact, I can run for short distances about 35 miles an hour. Of course, you guys can drive a lot faster than that so please watch out for me when you mount your metal horses.

People are always asking me, "Where did you get those antlers?"  Duh! Where do you think I got them? I grew them. I do it every year and then they fall off and I start growing new ones all over again. Uncle Moose is the Antler Champion with racks that can grow up to 50 pounds and spread 5 feet apart.

And remember the words of Pirke Avot (Chapters of the Fathers) the next time you have an opportunity to do a mitzvah - Be as strong as a leopard, as light as an eagle, as swift as a DEER and as brave as a lion to do the will of God. (Pirke Avot 5:23)
